Customizing Interiors - It's on the Rise!

By Gina Cannone, Artist/Designer

"Artistic Interior Designs" transform a child's room into a personal sanctuary with use of color, artwork, lighting and graceful furniture.

Well designed rooms are created not only to be functional, but to complement the interior and enhance a mood. There are numerous wall finishes to choose from. Walls can easily be covered with wallpaper, mirror, faux and texture painting, mural work or a combination of the above.

Faux finishes range from the soft subtle to the bold. They add beautiful movement and depth to a wall. Faux work has become very popular because of these versatile effects. It is also easier to repaint in the future without messy wall paper removal.

One-of-kind Murals are in demand and truly give a room a powerful punch. Mural work can become the main focus of the room with accessories accenting its theme or hand-painted borders, striping, corner ornamentation and vine work can be the final touch that the room needs. Choosing a mural theme is fun and exciting for the parents and reflects their own personal taste.

Ceilings should not be overlooked in the overall design of a room. A ceiling can be faux finished, texturized or artistically enhanced. Ceilings painted the palest sky blue with clouds or angels have become very popular. Which ever the choice, ceiling enhancement will not add aesthetically to the room but visual interest for your child.

Lighting, from the basic to the extreme is key to mood enhancing. Invizilite (drop lighting) fixtures run along the ceiling of the room. It casts a warm soft glow that accentuates not only ceiling murals but gives the entire room a calm and soothing aura. This is truly top of the line lighting. There are also many styles of recessed, track and free standing fixtures to choose from that can provide great light effects if properly placed and above all, connected to a dimmer switch.

Prior to purchasing furniture, remember to measure your space and specific areas where certain pieces are going to be placed. Do not overcrowd the room with oversized or unnecessary pieces.

The light colored woods and whites always work well with any color scheme, while the deep woods give a rich Victorian look. Customizing furniture ranges from designing the furniture from scratch, re-designing an existing piece, to ornamenting the furniture with artwork.

Customized window treatment are the final flair to the completion of a room. Beautiful fabrics can add warmth, color and texture. A well designed window treatment ties in the overall scheme of the room without being overstated or understated. Custom interior designs is, after all, the key to personalized and functional design. The true measure of the success of a project is in the happiness of the client. For the mom-to-be, may you enjoy creating your baby or child's room on your own or with a professional.
